Log Book Extract from 1869.

Carlton National School (In the Parish of Gedling)

1869
Jan.25th. I, Henry Madden, opened the school   -   admitted 13 boys ( mostly of imperfect education through attending Dames Schools).  Visited by Hon. O.N.N. Forester, Rector.
Jan. 26th. 8 new scholars. Classified and drilled pupils.
Feb. 9th. Shrove Tuesday Service at Gedling Church, and tea party afterwards.
Feb. 12th. Employed an older boy to teach the small class.
Feb. 16th. Exempted 2 boys from playtime for fidgety conduct.
Feb. 16th. Boys unusually quiet and industrious.
Sent William Sharp home to comb his hair, he did not return.
Mar. 16th. School full.
Apr. 5th. School reassembled after Easter in a club room at the "Black's Head" by the direction of the Rector as the school was being used for an exibition. There was not much room so the pupils were troublesome.
Apr. 12th. Very hot weather, sent a boy home as he came without a jacket.
Apr. 21st. Selected 2 boys as monitors. One was too sharp spoken for the little children.
June. 6th. Obliged to give Thomas Dale a severe thrashing to subdue his evil temper, he eventually expressed his sorrow.
Nov. 25th. This afternoon a big lad who does not bear a good character was discovered with a pipe and some tobacco in his possession. I warned him and threatened him with dismissal.
1870
Jan. 28th Some dozen boys have played truant as they wanted to slide.
Feb. 15th. Experienced difficulty in getting the first class boys to do reduction sums in square measure.

Inspectors Report.

This school gives every promise of success. All the standard exercises, except subtraction in the 2nd. Standard were very fairly done. The order is satisfactory, though the lads were a little restless. The Religious education should be more systematic.
Mar.. 1st. Shrove Tuesday. School in the morning. Party in the afternoon.
Mar. 21st. Attendance diminished owing to the employment of the scholars in potato picking and bird scaring.
